A person looking into a mirror and seeing a calm, smiling version of themselves with the words “your triggers are your greatest teachers.”

Your triggers are your greatest teachers.

“Your triggers are your greatest teachers.”

For instance, a person who is easily angered by a colleague’s criticism may be reflecting their insecurities. Or someone who feels a surge of anxiety when their partner is late may be revealing their fear of abandonment. These are just a few examples of triggers. They could also be situations where you feel a sudden rush of anger, sadness, or fear. These triggers are not just annoyances but reflections. They’re pointing to the parts of us we haven’t yet healed, faced, or entirely accepted.

They get stored as chronic tension, emotional reactivity, physical pain… even dis-ease. Ancient wisdom and Traditional Chinese Medicine have long understood this truth—our emotions don’t just vanish when ignored; they lodge themselves in our tissues, waiting to be addressed. This concept, known as ’emotional storage in the body’, suggests that our emotional experiences can manifest physically if not dealt with. (But that’s a rabbit hole I’ll unpack in another post, where I’ll delve deeper into the concept of emotional storage in the body and its implications for our health and well-being.)

When you start looking within, your triggers become powerful portals to the truth about yourself. This understanding empowers you to take control of your emotional well-being. And that’s where the real discovery begins.

Why Am I So Triggered?

That’s the question that changes everything.

This isn’t about blaming yourself—this isn’t a shame spiral. It’s about curiosity. About stepping back from the reaction and asking, “Wait a minute… what is this trying to show me?”

Sometimes, it’s a childhood wound. Sometimes, it’s a boundary that was never modeled for you. Sometimes, it’s a mask you’ve outgrown but are still wearing. And sometimes, it’s simply grief that has no name.

But the moment you lean in instead of shutting down? That’s where the real peeling back begins. That’s where the transformation happens. And that transformation is not just a distant dream, it’s within your reach, waiting for you to embrace it.

From Pain to Power

Every time I’ve asked myself, “Why did that hit me so hard?”—I’ve uncovered something deeper.

It hasn’t always been comfortable. It’s been messy as hell. However, it has also been profoundly liberating.

Once you dissect the wound, it no longer dictates your life and repeats itself on the wheel of karma. Once you hold space for what’s been triggered, the reaction loses its grip on you. Getting past it is making room for more joy and a profound sense of peace with yourself.

The Invitation

Your triggers are not your enemies. They are invitations—to pause, to listen, to reclaim parts of yourself you didn’t even know you’d given away.

So the next time something sparks a fire within you, consider this: it may be a teacher showing up exactly when you need the lesson most.

✦ Journal Prompt:

What’s a recent moment that triggered you—and what might it be trying to reveal about a part of yourself that’s ready to heal?
